Congenital Anomalies of the Digestive System in Pediatric Surgical Patients

Abstract
A clinical review of 194 cases of congenital anomalies of the digestive system in infant and Children diagnosed and treated at Department of surgery, College of medicine, Chonnam National University from Jan. 1973. to Aug. 1983 was performed.
With remarkable progress in the field of pediatric surgery, anesthesiology, fluid and electrolyte and antibiotics, morbidity and mortality has been decreased. However, the ultimate result has not been totally satisfactory, largely due to the lack of cognizance of early diagnosis and adequate, prompt treatment, partially due to the associated abnormal condition, that is, coexistence of other anomalies
In reviewing a total of 194 cases of digestive system anomalies, we have found that;
1) 145 were male, 49 were female, a ratio of 3:1
2) The order of frequency of disease was as follows: imperforate anus 64 cases (33%), congenital hypertrophic pyloric stenosis 50 cases(25, 8%), congenital megacolon 37 cases (19.1%).
3) While congenital hypertrophic pyloric stenosis showed the peak incidence in the occidental series, imperforate anus had the highest incidence in this study as in other publications in our country.
4) Assosiated congenital anomalies were found in 16 patients(8.2%). They were congenital heart disease, genitourinary anomalies, vertebral anomaly, G-¥° anomalies & polydactylism.
5) The operative mortality rate was l0.8%(19/176 Cases).
6) Refusal of surgical treatment by parents was encountered in 9 cases(4.6%).
